Fort Mill, Nation Ford lose first-round games

Both the Fort Mill and Nation Ford girls’ basketball teams did not make it past the first round of the 4A state playoffs.

Fort Mill fell to Greenville 58-37 and Nation Ford lost to Westside 74-47 with both games coming on the road. Fort Mill finished the season at 8-13 and Nation Ford finished the season at 8-16.

The Yellow Jackets were down early against Greenville, trailing 18-8 after the first quarter. Greenville was quick in transition and forced Fort Mill into six turnovers.

“They are very fast,” said Fort Mill head coach Brett Childers. “I thought we held in there. I am really proud of them. They fought hard.”

Fort Mill played better defensively in the second quarter holding Greenville to just 10 points, but struggled offensively, hitting just one shot from the field.

In the second half, Greenville outscored Fort Mill 22-10 with the help of hitting three 3-pointers to increase their 15 point lead to a 27 point lead after three quarters. The Jackets did play better in the fourth quarter outscoring Greenville 14-8 by hitting 12 of 16 free-throws.

Despite its improved free throw shooting, Fort Mill still struggled from the field, hitting just one of 15 shots. Freshman Amiah Lindsay led Fort Mill with 14 points in the game.
