Jackets open lax season with win over AC Flora
The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets boys’ lacrosse team opened the season with an 18-6 blowout win over AC Flora last week.
The Jackets were led by several players who scored multiple goals as Fort Mill went on a nine-goal scoring run in the third quarter to pull away in a constant rainfall.
Fort Mill was led by Calvin Kelly and Saxton Nelson, who five goals each. Ben Davidson scored four goals and Matt Russell scored three. Joshua Cobbina also scored for the Jackets.
The Jackets opened the game with goals from Davidson and Russell in the first quarter before AC Flora came back and tied the game at 2-2 before the end of of the first quarter.
Fort Mill scored four unanswered goals in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead at the half as Kelly scored his first goal of the game to break a 2-2 tie. Russell and Davidson also added their second goal and Kelly bookended the quarter by scoring his second goal of the game.
AC Flora cut the Jackets’ lead in half to start the third quarter by scoring two consecutive goals to make it 6-4, within less than 90 seconds into the second half.
Fort Mill responded with the nine-goal barrage to pull away and take a 15-4 lead after the third quarter. Davidson, Russell, Kelly all scored in the quarter and Nelson scored four of his five goals in the quarter.
In the fourth, AC Flora scored two more goals to cut into the lead, but again Fort Mill surged, rattling off three straight goals before closing out the game.
Later in the week, Fort Mill faced off against defending state champion Wando, which beat the Jackets in last year's state finals. The game was played at Irmo High School and Fort Mill lost 15-5.
Fort Mill takes on Charlotte Latin on the road and Greensboro Day at home at noon March 5.
