Riding a second half surge, the Fort Mill High Yellow Jackets girls’ soccer team won their home opener over Dorman 4-0 last week.

Fort Mill scored three second half goals and were led by two goals from freshman Helen Scholten, both coming in the second half.

“We have been spreading time working on moving the ball,” said Fort Mill head coach Chris Quinn. “We made some adjustments at halftime. We are still a young team, but they play well together.”

Fort Mill opened the game and controlled possession for most of the game. About seven minutes in, sophomore Erin Wolfe scored off an assist from junior Kimber Haley. That put the Lady Jackets up 1-0 and that’s where the score would remain for the first half.

There were two lengthy injury time outs during the first half, including one for senior Alyssa Smith, who left the game. Initial diagnosis was a sprained right LCL in her knee, Quinn said.

In the second half, Fort Mill opened the field more, spreading the ball around and controlling possession. Several times, Fort Mill had scoring opportunities down the right side of the field, but didn’t convert until Haley knocked a shot in off a free kick with about 30 minutes left in the game.

Dorman did rattle off two close shot attempts in the second half, but Fort Mill keeper Emily Ambrose unofficially had three saves in goal. Unofficially, Fort Mill had nine shots on goal against Dorman.

After Haley’s goal, Fort Mill came back about 18 minutes later as Scholten scored the first of her two goals with 12 minutes left in the game. She came back five minutes later and scored the second goal to give the Jackets a comfortable lead.

The Jackets are currently ranked fourth in the state coming off a good showing in the Viking Cup during the opening week of the season.

Fort Mill took on its first out-of-state competition in Providence Day later in the week and battled to a 0-0 tie in tough conditions. It was Fort Mill’s second tie on the season putting its record at 3-0-2 on the season.

Fort Mill has four games in five days on their schedule next week with road games at Northwestern and Cox Mill and home matches against Clover and Cuthbertson Friday and Saturday.
