Woods, picked up by ChiSox, finding way with new organization
After a struggle to start the 2016 baseball season, former Fort Mill High baseball player Kevin “KJ” Woods is adapting to a new organization.
Woods, who turned 21 last week on July 9, was released from the Miami Marlins organization in early May and picked up by the Chicago White Sox organization in late June. He is now playing in Single A with the Kannapolis Intimidators.
Chicago’s AAA team, the Charlotte Knights, played in Fort Mill for years before moving into a new stadium in the Queen City.
Drafted by the Marlins in 2013, Woods has appeared in 15 games with Kannapolis since joining the team on June 23. He was hitting just .155 in 24 games for the high Single A Marlins’ affiliate in Jupiter, Fla., before he was released. Since landing in North Carolina, Woods is hitting .278 with four home runs and seven RBIs.
He played about three and-a-half seasons with the organization. Kannapolis is considered A-ball, midway between low A and high A, for the White Sox organization. Woods is the second Fort Mill High player in recent years to play for Kannapolis behind Charlie Lisk, who played for them from 2003 through 2005.
Tomasovich in Wisconsin
Another Fort Mill High player drafted last year, Andrew Tomasovich, is playing in Single A, pitching for the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League in Wisconsin. Tomasovich was drafted in 2015 by the Oakland A’s organization out of Charleston Southern University.
Tomasovich, 22, is 1-0 with a 4.44 ERA in 19 games for the Snappers this season. He has pitched 24 innings and allowed 16 hits and 17 walks while striking out 31.
Tomasovich is in his second season of professional baseball having played some in the Arizona Rookie League and the New York-Penn League in low A ball for Oakland.
