Boxing coming to Banks Street Gym

The Banks Street Gym has seen a lot of basketball battles on the hardwood through the years, but on July 30, battles will be fought on canvas.

Led by Mario Noviello, owner of Light Bright Boxing in Rock Hill, a night of boxing is expected to draw more than 300 spectators. This is the third time Noviello has held boxing events in Fort Mill, with the first two times at Regent Park. Noviello said the move to Banks Street Gym should be beneficial.

“It is a better facility because it holds more people,” he said. “I think it will grow from here.”

There are 13 bouts scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Each bout will consist of three, two-minute rounds between boxers. There is one junior bout schedule at 106 pounds, with the rest falling between the 120 to heavyweight (200 pounds plus) classifications. The majority of boxers are from the Rock Hill and Chester areas.

“I like Fort Mill because there are no boxing gyms here,” Noviello said.

Light Bright Boxing is one of two boxing gyms in Rock Hill. The other one, Rock Hill Boxing Club, also will have fighters in the July 30 event. In fact, two of the bouts will feature fights between the two gyms.

Light Bright Boxing is a USA Boxing sanctioned gym Noviello started in 2011. Noviello boxed in college and the military.
