Inmate charged after fight at York Co. prison

A Clover man held in York County’s prison since last month allegedly started a fight with another inmate earlier this week, resulting in additional criminal charges, police records show.

Officials say the incident happened on Wednesday at the York County Detention Center. Deputies have charged Maurice Alonzo Hughes, 34, with assault and battery for punching a fellow inmate, according to a sheriff’s office report.

Jail records show Hughes was first arrested in February, accused of harassment. The other man involved in the jail fight has also been in jail since February, accused of burglary.

A detention center employee says the two men had a verbal altercation and employees were attempting to separate them when the fight broke out. Hughes is accused of hitting the other inmate in the stomach, the report states. It’s unclear if anyone was injured.

Police records do not state what the men were arguing about.
