Police: Cat to blame for theft from Winthrop apartment?

A woman who reported $100 missing from her apartment near Winthrop University told police that her roommate had taken items from her before, but the roommate had always blamed her cat for the thefts.

The victim had returned home from a five-day vacation to discover several items in her room had been disturbed, according to a Rock Hill police report. A wallet she left sitting on the bed with other items was found on the floor between the bed and the wall, with $100 missing from inside.

The 22-year-old woman said her 24-year-old roommate was the only person in the apartment while she was gone, the report states. She blamed the woman for having taken several small items from the room in the past, but said she had always returned them and then blamed her cat for moving the items.

The roommate denied taking the money, according to the report. Winthrop University performed a quarterly room inspection while the woman was gone, but the inspector was unable to tell police where the items were at the time.
