A Fort Mill man has been charged with attempted murder following a Sunday morning altercation on Old Nation Road.

John Brooks Hall Duncan, 23, was arrested after investigators spoke with numerous people involved in the fight and neighbors who witnessed the incident, according to a York County Sheriff’s Office report.

On Sunday, the victim, 35, and members of the victim’s family went to meet with Duncan to discuss an incident involving the victim’s nephew. The nephew, 19, alleges Duncan and some other men “jumped him” last week.

Prior to the victim showing up, a neighbor reported seeing a white man pacing up and down the street, but said she didn’t think anything of it.

When the victim and his family arrived at the scene, the victim realized Duncan had a knife and began to run from Duncan, the report states. Duncan then allegedly stabbed the victim in the abdomen.

The victim’s condition is unknown.

Several other neighbors reported seeing a group of adults chasing a man through the neighborhood.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found Duncan bent over at the waist, complaining of a broken arm. He said the victim jumped out of the car and pulled a “grandpa knife” on him so he ran away, with four people chasing him. A female got in Duncan’s way and the victim and the others “came at him with a wooden stick,” the report states.

When the victim tried to hit Duncan with the stick, Duncan said he put up his arm to block the blow and simultaneously stabbed the victim.

Two knives were recovered at the scene, including a red pocketknife Duncan had on his person when deputies arrived.

The nephew of the victim told deputies he hit Duncan with the stick after Duncan stabbed his uncle.

Duncan’s mother and sister told deputies the victim had been sending “threatening messages” to Duncan.

After being treated at Piedmont Medical Center, Duncan was booked into the York County Detention Center on Sunday afternoon on charges of attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. His bond was denied.

A criminal background check shows Duncan has a long list of previous charges and several convictions with various York County law enforcement agencies, including property crimes and drug charges.

He was most recently convicted of felony property offense and burglary in 2011.
