Report: Rock Hill man spotted breaking into home told deputies he was confused
An alleged burglar told officers he was lost and confused when they found him outside a home on Catawba Church Road in Rock Hill.
Deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Office were called out to the home this weekend in reference to a possible burglary, according to an incident report. The caller said a man in a tank top and jeans with a black book bag was cutting the screen out of a window.
When they arrived, deputies saw a man in a black tank top and jeans, later identified as Richard Bigham, Jr., 32, of Rock Hill. Bigham ran away into the woods and into a field, but was eventually caught by deputies.
Bigham told deputies he was confused and didn’t understand what was going on. He said he’d just woken up and was trying to figure out where he was.
Deputies recovered the black book bag, which was filled with a hamburger cooker, box of garbage bags, money box, red metal box and a pair of garden shears. Bigham said the book bag wasn’t his because his book bag was a different color.
Deputies also found 18 Lorazepam pills in a bottle with the label scratched off.
The homeowner told deputies the garden shears were the only thing that belonged to him and that they had been in an unlocked storage area. He said he didn’t hear Bigham because his television was turned up.
Bigham, who has seven prior convictions for property crime offenses, was arrested and charged with petit larceny, burglary and possession of Lorazepam. As of Wednesday afternoon, he was still in custody at the York County Detention Center on a $12,500 bond.
