Man charged with driving away from Rock Hill traffic stop

Rock Hill police arrested a Charlotte man on Tuesday – five months after they say he sped away from a traffic stop on North Anderson Road.

The problem for the driver: He already had given the officer his license and registration when he was pulled over in November.

When Ryan Barrett Wilson, 33, was pulled over for failure to dim his headlights on Nov. 3, the officer told him he could smell the odor of marijuana coming from inside the car, according to a police report. Wilson denied having drugs in the car, and when the officer told him to step out of the vehicle, he “started playing with his phone,” the report states.

When the officer reached into the car, the report states, Wilson put the car in drive and drove off. His license and registration, which the officer had placed on the roof of the car, blew off onto the side of the road.

Warrants were issued for Wilson’s arrest, but it wasn’t until January that Charlotte police alerted Rock Hill they had Wilson in custody. On Tuesday, Wilson appeared at the Rock Hill Police Department to turn himself in on charges of resisting police and failure to stop for blue lights.
