A woman looking to rent a home in Rock Hill says she was swindled by someone who may live half a world away.
The woman told Rock Hill police she was contacted via email by a man claiming to have a home for rent, and asking her to send him a $600 deposit plus $600 for the first month’s rent. He told the woman he lives in Nigeria and asked her to wire him the money, according to a Rock Hill Police report.
After sending the initial $1,200, she told police the “landlord” continued to ask her for money, eventually totaling $2,300. Once she became suspicious, the woman filed a police report against the man on Tuesday.
The woman was reportedly still in contacting with the man via email. Police were unable to confirm the ownership of the home in question on Wednesday or the nation where the owner lives. A police spokesman said cases involving suspects overseas have to be turned over to federal investigators.
