Attempted murder on a moped? York police charge a suspect after pursuit.

Police in York have charged a man with attempted murder and DUI after he shot at a woman while driving on a moped, according to police and jail records.

Charles Demario Pendergrass, 43, of Wilson Chapel Road in York, is accused of shooting at a woman on Hickory Lane in York around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. The woman was not injured, police said.

The arrest was made by patrol officers working with investigators, said Det. Kevin Hoffman of the York Police Department.

A York officer, responding to the call on Hickory Lane that shots had been fired, saw Pendergrass on a green moped and tried to make a traffic stop, an incident report states. Because the report had been about shots being fired, the officer pulled his gun and approached the moped, but Pendergrass drove away.

The officer followed the moped being driven by Pendergrass in his patrol car, then saw Pendergrass throw a gun from his pocket to the side of the road, police said.

Several streets away, the moped driver finally stopped and two officers took Pendergrass into custody.

The gun, a .45-caliber handgun, was recovered by other officers. During a search of Pendergrass, police also found crack cocaine, reports state.

Pendergrass was taken to the York Police Department, where blood alcohol testing showed he was more than three times over the legal limit, the report states.

Pendergrass was charged with attempted murder, DUI, possession of crack cocaine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and misdemeanor charges of driving with an open container and littering.

He remains in the York County jail on the felony charges under a $43,000 bond, jail records show.
