SCDOT workers report stolen equipment from Rock Hill construction site

A state road crew reported this week that someone stole a piece of construction equipment they had rented from a Rock Hill business, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

A crew with the S.C. Department of Transportation was working near the intersection of Highway 161 and Mount Gallant Road about 3 p.m. Wednesday when the theft occurred, according to a sheriff’s report.

When crew members were turning their equipment around “a short distance up the street,” someone reportedly took a walk-behind scarifier that is used to grind pavement.

The machine, valued at $3,500, was rented by DOT from United Rental in Rock Hill, the report states. Officers obtained the serial number and entered the machine into the National Crime Information Center.
