York man on bond caught after police chase: 289 grams meth found, officers say
A York County man who was out on bond has been charged with trafficking drugs after a police chase led to a seizure of around 10 ounces of meth, police said.
Brian Henry Hayes, 26, of York, was booked into the York County jail Thursday, according to York County jail and police records. Hayes is charged by the S.C. Highway Patrol with trafficking methamphetamine, four other drug charges, failure to stop for a blue light, and driving under a suspended license, according to police and jail records.
Police seized 289 grams of meth, said Marvin Brown, commander of the York County drug unit.
Hayes fled a traffic stop by Fort Mill Police Department officers, which led to a pursuit in York County by troopers, said S.C. Highway Patrol Master Trooper Gary Miller. Hayes was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu during the police pursuit, then stopped the car.
“He jumped out and ran and was captured,” Miller said.
Police found meth, marijuana and other drugs, Miller said.
No one was injured, Miller said.
Hayes also is charged as being a fugitive from justice, jail records show. Hayes was out of jail on a $10,000 bond from a June drug arrest, according to South Carolina court records.
He has previous felony drug convictions from 2018 and 2017, York County court records show.
Hayes remains in the York County jail.
Trafficking meth of the weight that was seized carries a mandatory 25 years in prison for a conviction under South Carolina law.
Methamphetamine is a powerful, highly addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system, according to the U.S. government National Institute on Drug Abuse.
The meth trafficking arrest by police in York County after a traffic stop is the second this week. Drug agents charged two men Sunday with trafficking meth after seizing around seven pounds of the drug and guns after a traffic stop in Rock Hill.
