Man shot in Rock Hill Christmas Eve; no arrest as investigation continues, police say

A Rock Hill man was shot Christmas Eve, police said.

The 22-year-old victim was found wounded by police at Piedmont Medical Center late Tuesday, officers said.

The victim was shot at a home in the 300 block of Maple Street, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department. That street is in the Sunset Road neighborhood of Rock Hill near Friedheim Park. Officers canvassed the area nearby but did not find a suspect, Chavis said.

Officers from the police department’s patrol division, violent crimes unit, detectives, and forensics responded after reports were called in to police about shots being fired in the area around 3 p.m. Tuesday, Chavis said.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

The victim was shot in the abdomen but is expected to survive, Chavis said. The case is being investigated as an an attempted murder, according to police and incident reports.

No other people were injured and there were no other reports of retaliation, Chavis said. Police do not believe there was any threat to public safety, he said.

“We did not find any reason to believe that the public was in danger or that there was a threat to anyone else,” Chavis said.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, Chavis said.
