Rock Hill felon beat, kidnapped girlfriend, police say. In jail without bond.

A Rock Hill man has been charged in a December kidnapping and beating where he told an ex-girlfriend the only way she would leave him is if she were dead, according to police and court documents.

Jamar Rakee Hemphill, 36, was arrested three weeks after the woman was found at a North Carolina hospital in Pineville recovering from her injuries, according to incident and arrest reports from the Rock Hill Police Department.

He is charged with two counts of kidnapping and two counts of domestic violence, records show.

Kidnapping carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison for a conviction under South Carolina law, and domestic violence charges carry up to 20 years.

The incident happened Dec. 14 at a Fudge Street home in Rock Hill, according to a police incident report. When the woman told Hemphill the relationship was over, Hemphill told her, “The only way out of it is death,”officers said.

Detectives had been seeking Hemphill since shortly after the incident. He was found walking along train tracks in southern Rock Hill and taken into custody, officers said.

Hemphill was free on $55,000 bond from a May drug arrest at the time of the attack, police and court records show.

Hemphill was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2005 after he pleaded guilty to trafficking cocaine, possession of a stolen vehicle and other charges, according to South Carolina court records.

He remains in the York County jail without bond.
