Pit bull attacks woman, York County officials investigating possible dog-fighting case

York County deputies seized 14 dogs in Hickory Grove potentially used for fighting after an elderly woman was attacked Saturday by a pit bull.

Deputies responded to a call about a dog attack on Sawmill Road and found a 71-year-old woman lying on the ground, according to a press release from the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman was a family member of the dog’s owner; she was at the home to tend to several dogs for the owner when one got loose and attacked her, the release said. The woman was taken by helicopter to a Charlotte hospital for her injuries, the release said.

The pit bull was seized by animal control, the release said.

After further investigation, deputies found 14 dogs at the home and saw evidence that the dogs were improperly restrained. The dogs were reportedly aggressive and lacked adequate food, water and shelter, the release said.

Officers are investigating the possibility that the animals were used for fighting, the release said. All 14 dogs were taken to York County Animal Control, the release said.

There is no information on the woman’s condition. The investigation is ongoing.
