Inmate helping Chester deputies escapes, sheriff says. He was quickly recaptured
An inmate who was helping Chester County deputies in an investigation escaped from custody Wednesday before being recaptured, officials said.
Tanner Lee Harris, 25, fled from Chester detectives on Second Street in Chester, according to a statement from Max Dorsey, Chester County Sheriff.
Harris ran into the home of a relative on Second Street around 12 p.m. and hid in the attic before he was caught about 10 minutes later, Dorsey said.
Harris did not have a weapon and no one in law enforcement or the public was hurt, Dorsey said.
Harris faces charges of escape, Dorsey said.
A conviction for escape in South Carolina carries a sentence of one to 15 years in the S.C. Department of Corrections, state law shows.
Harris had been in the York County jail at the Moss Justice Center in York since Sunday after he was taken into custody by York County deputies on pending Rock Hill Police Department arrest warrants, Rock Hill police said.
On Monday, Rock Hill Police Department officers went to the York County jail, picked up Harris, then served the arrest warrants against him at the Rock Hill Law Center, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department.
Harris had warrants charging failure to stop for blue lights, possession of a stolen vehicle, drugs, financial card fraud, and shoplifting, according to police and jail records.
Harris also had pending theft warrants from Chester County, officials said.
Harris was picked up Wednesday by Chester deputies, officials said.
Harris remains in custody in Chester, officials said.
