Man in SUV tried to lure boy, 8, into vehicle in Rock Hill neighborhood, police say

Police in Rock Hill are investigating after a man in an SUV apparently tried to lure a boy into the vehicle with the promise of a gift, officers said.

The incident happened in the Millwood Plantation neighborhood near Heckle Boulevard, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department. Police are investigating the case as an attempted abduction, Chavis said.

“We are taking this report very seriously and investigating it,” Chavis said.

Detectives went door-to-door in the neighborhood Wednesday afternoon and evening seeking information, officers said.

The child, 8, told officers that he was outside playing basketball when the stranger stopped.

“The unidentified male told him that he had lots of money and would like to take him to the store to purchase something for him,” a Rock Hill police incident report stated.

The child reported to officers that he did not recognize the driver of the red SUV, the report stated.

The investigation remains ongoing, Chavis said.
