SLED investigation underway after person dies while in custody of Rock Hill police
South Carolina law enforcement officials are investigating after a person arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident died Saturday while in Rock Hill police custody.
Police responded to a domestic violence incident around 2:20 p.m., and based on an initial investigation, officers arrested the person, said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department.
Police put the person into a patrol car and took them to the department jail, Chavis said. The person became unresponsive upon arrival at the jail, Chavis said.
The person was transported to the hospital by paramedics and was later pronounced dead there, Chavis said.
Police have not released the name of the individual.
Rock Hill police are conducting an internal investigation into the incident, Chavis said. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will conduct an independent investigation.
