Man shot dead in Lancaster County; body found on road, car miles away, sheriff says

A man was found Sunday fatally shot in Lancaster County, deputies said.

The man’s death is being investigated as a homicide, said Doug Barfield, spokesman for the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Monday morning, detectives and crime scene officers continued to work the case, Barfield said.

“We have teams of deputies working on this right now,” Barfield said.

The body was found around 8:30 a.m. Sunday on a gravel road near Potter Road, near Kirk Air Base which is northeast of the city of Lancaster. No vehicles were at the scene, Barfield said.

The victim’s car was found in another location off Kershaw-Camden highway in southern Lancaster County around 9 a.m., Barfield said. A passerby notified police after seeing the car in a ditch near Andrew Jackson High School, Barfield said.

Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile declined to add additional information on the case. Faile said in a statement the evidence recovered from both crime scenes is important to the investigation but did not release details.

“We have developed a good bit of valuable information in the short time since the discovery of the body, and we are optimistic this information will lead us to the person or persons who are responsible.,” Faile said in a statement.

The identity of the victim has not been released by the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office.
