Chester High School student, a ‘true teammate,’ killed in ATV accident
Two people are dead, including a 17-year-old, following two fatal collisions that happened hours apart in Chester and York counties over the weekend, officials said.
On Friday, a 17-year-old was killed in a single-ATV wreck around 8:30 p.m. on Grant Lake Road near Chester, Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said. The teen, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was ejected from the four-wheeler and hit the pavement, Bolt said.
The teen died at the scene, Bolt said. On Sunday, Chester County Deputy Coroner Tommy Williams identified the teen as Evan Bass.
Bass attended Chester High School, according to Williams. On the school’s website, athletic department staff posted a tribute to Bass, who was a goalie on the school’s soccer team.
“Evan was a young man who was a true teammate and Cyclone,” the post said. “He had a genuine love for everyone he met, which made him special to all. Evan had a heart of gold. Evan will be missed by all but he touched us in a special way. He taught us to always be kind, care for others, to be selfless, to have fun, and to love. For these qualities and many more, Evan will forever be remembered.”
York car wreck
On Saturday, the driver of a 2004 Ford Focus was killed in a single-vehicle crash around 12:25 a.m. on U.S. 321 near Turkey Creek Road in York, Bolt said. The driver was traveling north on the highway and went off the right side of the road, striking several trees, Bolt said.
The driver, who has not been identified, had to be mechanically extracted and was taken to a nearby hospital by helicopter, where the driver later died, Bolt said. There were no passengers in the car, Bolt said.
