York man had child porn videos, used Kik social media app to share, deputies say

A York man has been arrested and charged with using a social media app to share child porn videos, York County deputies and South Carolina prosecutors said.

Dale Alan Smith, 62, was charged Tuesday with two counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, and 10 counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to York County Sheriff’s Office arrest warrants obtained by The Herald.

Smith had 10 videos of minors as young as toddlers engaged in sex acts on his cellphone, according to the warrants.

Smith used the Kik messenger social media app to share two of the videos, the warrants state.

The third-degree charges are linked to possession of illegal child pornography, and the second-degree charges are connected to sharing the porn, according to prosecutors and South Carolina law.

Each charge carries up to 10 years in prison for a conviction.

Police were alerted by a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, said Robert Kittle, spokesman for the S.C. Attorney General’s Office. The case was investigated by a team of detectives from the sheriff’s office, according to the attorney general and arrest warrants.

The case is part of South Carolina’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force that is part of the attorney general’s office, prosecutors said.

Smith remains in the York County Detention center on a $60,000 bond, according to the jail web site and South Carolina online court records..
