SC man free on 4 bonds charged with meth trafficking, assault on York cop
A Gaffney man free from jail on four bonds from arrests in recent months now faces drug trafficking and assault on an officer charges after he fought with York police during a chase, records show.
Windell Talbot Thompson, 43, was booked into the York County jail over the weekend on charges of trafficking methamphetamine, assault on an officer while resisting arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle, and receiving stolen goods, according to police records.
Thompson fled on foot in the Hunter Street area of the city of York after a vehicle traffic stop by York Police Department officers, according to a police report. Thompson struggled with an officer and raked the officer across the face during the foot chase, the report said.
Thompson was taken into custody after a further foot chase, police said.
Officers seized a backpack with methamphetamine, the report said. Thompson was charged with trafficking meth between 28 grams and 100 grams, which carries a mandatory sentence of seven to 25 years in prison if convicted under South Carolina law.
The car Thompson had been driving was reported stolen to the York County Sheriff’s Office, and the license plate on the car had been reported stolen in Charlotte.
Online South Carolina court records show Thompson was free on bail from four previous arrests in the past nine months.
In December, Thompson was released on $3,500 bond after an arrest in York County for receiving stolen goods, online court records show.
In February, Thompson was charged in Cherokee County with cocaine possession and released on $3,500 bail, records show.
In May, Thompson was arrested in York County for drug distribution and released after posting a $7,500 bond, according to online court records.
And, Thompson was arrested in York County last month on a charge of domestic violence, according to court records. He was released after posting a $7,500 bond, records show.
Thompson remains in the York County jail after Saturday’s arrest on a bond of $67,125, York County Sheriff’s Office online jail records show.
