Lancaster, SC man charged with murder after woman shot following argument, police say

A Lancaster man is charged with murder after the shooting death of a woman, officials said.

Takeisha Massey, 38, died at Medical University of South Carolina-Lancaster hospital. She was shot several times Saturday at a home on Caroline Court, said Karla Knight-Deese, Lancaster County Coroner.

Curtis Townsend, 21, of Old Camden Road, Lancaster, was arrested shortly after the shooting, said Kayla Vaughan, spokesperson for the Lancaster Police Department. Townsend was caught by Lancaster police and Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office deputies with the county’s violent crimes task force. Townsend hid in an outdoor trash can near where Massey was shot, Vaughan said.

Massey and Townsend knew each other but details about their relationship were not released, Vaughan said. Massey was shot during an argument, Vaughan said.

Townsend is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to police and court records. Townsend remains in the Lancaster County jail after he was denied bail following a court hearing Sunday in Lancaster.

Townsend’s lawyer, 6th Circuit Public Defender William Frick, declined comment Monday about the case.

A conviction for murder in South Carolina carries a mandatory sentence of 30 years to life in a S.C. Department of Corrections prison.
