Teen charged with carjacking after York County woman attacked, deputies say

A teenager is in custody after a woman was carjacked at an apartment complex in York County Monday, sheriff deputies said.

The teen, 17, is charged with carjacking and first-degree assault and battery, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman was assaulted after 3 a.m. Monday in the parking lot of apartments on Sedgewick Drive near S.C. 160 and Gold Hill Road between Fort Mill and Tega Cay, according to a sheriff’s office incident report. The victim told deputies she was in the car drinking coffee before leaving for work when she was forced out of her car and hit in the head, the report stated.

The victim had hair pulled from her head and had injuries to her knees from the attack, deputies said. Her car was then stolen, deputies said.

After the victim called 911, deputies found the car heading northbound on Interstate 77 near Exit 88, the report stated. Deputies stopped the car on I-77, south of the North Carolina state line with Charlotte, and took the teen suspect into custody.

In South Carolina, carjacking is a felony that carries up to 20 years for a conviction, state law shows. First-degree assault and battery carries up to 10 years for a conviction. Both charges are felonies, South Carolina law shows.

The teen’s name has not been released because of his age. The teen is in the York County jail, Faris said.
