Army soldier charged with Chester County, SC murder of grandfather, great-grandmother
A U.S. Army soldier has been extradited to South Carolina from Germany after he was indicted in connection with the 2020 Chester County shooting deaths of two family members, according to officials and court documents.
Gene Alexzander “Alex” Scott, 24, of Columbia, was indicted by a Chester County grand jury on two counts of murder for the June 2020 deaths of Gene Rogers and Billie Rogers, according to a statement from Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey and indictments obtained by The Herald.
The indictments allege Scott used a gun to kill Billie Rogers, 78, and Gene Rogers, 61, at the couple’s home on Doe Street in rural Chester County near Richburg.
Gene Rogers was Scott’s grandfather, and Billie was Scott’s great-grandmother, said Grant Suskin, spokesman for the sheriff’s office in Chester County.
Fathers Day 2020 killings
The fatal shootings were discovered on Fathers Day 2020, officials said. Chester County deputies, State Law Enforcement Division agents, other South Carolina police, the FBI, and military Criminal Investigation Services from both the Army and Navy had been investigating since the couple was found shot to death, Dorsey said.
A grand jury in Chester County indicted Scott Thursday on two counts of murder and one count of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, records show.
Scott was taken into custody in Germany where he was stationed, Dorsey said in a written statement.
Suspect jailed in Chester
Over the weekend, Scott was extradited back to South Carolina. Scott remains in the Chester County jail pending an initial court appearance.
Chester County is a mainly rural county of about 32,000 people located between Rock Hill and Columbia.
A conviction for murder in South Carolina carries a sentence of 30 years to life for a conviction.
