A teenager is in custody and charged with attempted murder after a woman was shot Friday in the Chester County town of Great Falls. The incident caused the temporary lockdown of area schools, officials said.

The suspect in the shooting is Kenneth Luke Craig, 19, according to arrest warrants obtained by The Herald.

Craig is charged with shooting a woman twice in the torso with a rifle after the two had an argument, the warrants state.

Chester County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Grant Suskin said the victim, 33, was an acquaintance of Craig. The victim’s name has not been released. The victim was airlifted to a Columbia hospital and was in stable condition Friday afternoon, Suskin said.

Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey said Craig remains in the Chester County jail pending an initial court appearance.

The shooting happened Friday morning on Canal Street, Chester County Sheriff Max Dorsey said.

Shooting prompts schools lockdown

Craig was at-large in Great Falls after the shooting until he was taken into custody before noon, Suskin said. An elementary, middle, and high school were on lockdown until the suspect was apprehended, Suskin said.

Deputies, officers with the Great Falls Police Department, and State Law Enforcement Division were involved in the search, Suskin said. A SLED helicopter was used to search for the suspect.

Great Falls is a town of around 2,000 people at the southeastern edge of Chester County along the Catawba River. It borders Fairfield County and Lancaster County.
