Rock Hill felon on bail charged with murder after I-77 shooting, York sheriff says
A Rock Hill felon who was out on bail on earlier charges has been charged with murder after a person was shot to death on Interstate 77 in South Carolina near Fort Mill, according to officials and court records.
Robert Daquan Johnson, 26, was served a murder warrant Saturday after he was arrested following a police chase hours after the victim was found dead, said Trent Faris, spokesman for the York County Sheriff’s Office.
The York County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the victim.
The shooting was reported around 2 a.m. Friday on I-77 near Exit 85, Faris said. Emergency responders found the person who was shot in a truck, Faris said. The victim later died, Faris said. S.C. Highway Patrol troopers also responded to the scene, officials said.
Later on Friday, around 2:30 p.m., Johnson was taken into custody after a police chase in Rock Hill that ended on Spruce Street, Faris said.
The site of the crime is just west of the boundary of the Town of Fort Mill, north of Rock Hill and about five miles south of the North Carolina state line with Charlotte.
Johnson, the suspect, was sentenced to 27 months in prison in 2017 after he was convicted in federal court on weapons charges, records show. After his release, Johnson was charged in York County in 2021 with domestic violence and released on a $100,000 bond, South Carolina court records show.
Johnson was denied bail Saturday after he was charged with murder from Friday’s killing, records show.
York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson said the investigation remains ongoing.
