Winthrop University police are investigating an apparent burglary in Tillman Hall after a broken window and traces of blood were found in the building early Thursday.

A broken window was found on the first floor of Tillman Hall at about 6 a.m., university spokesman Jeff Perez said. There was no indication anything was taken, or of any damage beyond the broken window.

Police found “some evidence of blood” believed to be from the person who broke the window, Perez said, and forensic investigators from the York County Sheriff’s Office responded.

“Near as I can tell, somebody broke in, they walked around a little bit and then they left,” he said.

The building has an alarm system, but Perez said it’s not clear whether an alarm sounded. Surveillance footage “will be part of the investigation,” he said.

The university has been holding orientation festivities this week, but Perez said this morning that Tillman Hall will remain open.

“We’re business as usual,” he said.
