A York man used a canoe to access River Hills Marina, where he took about $700 in items from a moored boat, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Kyle Dean Waters, 21, was charged with entering a vessel with intent to steal, petit larceny, obtaining property under false pretenses and malicious injury to property. He was placed in the York County detention center, where he remained Thursday afternoon under $11,130 bond.

Investigators believe Waters used a canoe to gain access to River Hills Marina in Lake Wylie to steal speakers and an amplifier from a boat moored in the marina, spokesman Trent Faris said. The items, which were valued at $700, were later found at a pawn shop in Rock Hill, where Waters reportedly sold them for $50.

Detectives found several more boating and fishing items believed to have been stolen by Waters, Faris said. The owners of some of the items have been identified from boats docked at the River Hills Marina and South Point Marina in Belmont, N.C. Some of the owners have not been identified.

York County investigators are asking anyone who believes they had items stolen from their watercraft on Lake Wylie since June 1 to call Det. Tracy Strickland at 803-628-3104.
