Report: Clover road rage suspect slammed on brakes, pulled knife on driver

A Clover man was charged with reckless driving after a road rage incident during which he allegedly displayed a knife to another driver, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident happened about 10 a.m. Wednesday on Ridge Road in Clover, according to a sheriff’s report. The 30-year-old victim said the suspect was going 35 mph in a 55 mph zone, and that he slammed on his brakes when she started to pass. He reportedly pulled out a large black knife and waved it at her multiple times. She had her 4-year-old son in the car with her.

Deputies found the car at a gas station on U.S. 321 and spoke with the driver, 33-year-old George Alexander Fry III, who was buying a beer, the report states. He told deputies he was driving the posted 55 mph speed limit on Ridge Road when another driver approached him from behind and tried to pass him on a double yellow line.

Fry admitted to stepping on his brakes hard to “brake check” the driver, who he said was “being dangerous,” deputies said. When asked about presenting a knife, Fry “adamantly denied the allegation,” but when asked if he had a knife in the vehicle, Fry retrieved a fixed-blade knife in a black sheath from the passenger seat. The knife was not strapped into the sheath.

Deputies said Fry smelled of alcohol, and they found a mostly empty container of beer on the driver’s side floorboard of his car that was still cold, the report states. A magistrate told them there was not enough to charge Fry with assault. Fry was charged with reckless driving, driving without a valid license and open container. He was placed in the York County detention center but was released as of Friday.
