A female jogger reported being attacked Monday by a masked assailant near Fort Mill, according to deputies and a York County Sheriff’s Office incident report.

The incident happened around 5:20 a.m. off Sutton Road near the intersection of Camber Woods Drive, the report states.

The area is west of Interstate 77 and south of S.C. 160, a few miles south of the North Carolina state line. The areas in northern York County west of I-77 have a Fort Mill address but are outside the Fort Mill town limits.

The woman told deputies she was jogging along Sutton Road when she was tackled by a man who approached her from behind, the report states. The victim said she was groped and fought back, then the man fled into nearby woods, according to the incident report.

The victim immediately called 911, the resort said.

A K-9 team attempted to track the suspect but was unsuccessful, deputies said.

The suspect is described in the report as a man around 5 feet 8 inches tall wearing dark clothing, a gray hat and a mask, the report states.

The reported assault remains under investigation, sheriff’s office spokesman Trent Faris said Tuesday.

Be safe while exercising

The reported attack happened before sunrise Monday.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officials urged people not to go out alone in a news conference earlier this month after assaults of women walking and jogging in Mecklenburg County, the Charlotte Observer reported.

There have been attacks on women in southern Mecklenburg County in 2022 and 2023, according to reporting from the Observer. In one of those 2022 attacks, a man was arrested in late September, the Observer reported.
