High-speed police chase on Cherry Road ends in car crash
A man who led police on a high-speed chase on Cherry Road late Sunday was taken into custody after crashing near Ebinport Road, police say.
The chase began about 9:15 p.m. when an officer saw a silver Ford Crown Victoria speeding north on Cherry Road near Evergreen Avenue, according to a Rock Hill Police report. The vehicle, estimated to be traveling about 100 mph, was changing lanes erratically.
The Rock Hill officer learned of a silver Crown Victoria reported stolen earlier in the week as he chased the car down Cherry Road between 90 and 100 mph, police said. Winthrop University police joined in the chase but disengaged after the vehicle turned onto Ebinport Road.
Rock Hill officers continued on Ebinport and saw the vehicle wrecked at Hollythorne Drive, police said. Winthrop officers assisted in getting the driver, 20-year-old Thomas Lee Sibley III, out of the car and handcuffed. EMS transported Sibley to Piedmont Medical Center.
Sibley had .05 grams of marijuana and a small digital scale in his pockets, the report states. He was charged with failure to stop for blue lights and siren, reckless driving and possession of marijuana.
Sibley was placed in the Rock Hill city jail and released Monday after posting an $11,000 bond.
No injuries or other crashes were reported from the chase. Police later determined the car Sibley was driving was not the stolen vehicle.
