A man fired a shotgun through a bedroom wall at deputies in Indian Land on Monday before an hourslong SWAT standoff, the Lancaster County sheriff said.

Lancaster deputies went to the man’s house for a domestic violence call after 2 p.m.

Officers from the sheriff’s office and State Law Enforcement Division took Jeffrey Dale Kitchen, 38, into custody around 11 p.m. off Dobys Bridge Road, Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile said in a statement.

Indian Land is in northern Lancaster County, south of Fort Mill and the Ballantyne area of Mecklenburg County.

Kitchen allegedly fired through a wall at two deputies in a hallway who had gone in the house.

The two deputies were not hurt by the shotgun blast, Faile said.

Kitchen refused to come out of the locked bedroom, Faile said. Late Monday night police broke down the door and used a chemical spray on Kitchen, who was arrested in the attic, Faile said.

Officials took Kitchen to a medical facility for evaluation and testing, Faile said. Charges were pending.
