An investigation by South Carolina state agents is underway after an inmate died Thursday at the York County jail, officials said.

The in-custody death is the third in York County this year. Two inmates at the county jail have died, and another person died while in the Rock Hill city jail.

Thursday’s death involved a 22-year-old man, according to a written statement from the York County Sheriff’s Office. The man who had been in jail since Aug. 27 was found unresponsive in his cell around 5 p.m.

The inmate who died has not been identified.

Sheriff Kevin Tolson notified the State Law Enforcement Division to investigate.

The sheriff’s office operates the county jail, located at the Moss Justice Center in York. It holds people who have been charged by area law enforcement agencies and are awaiting trial.
