South Carolina police are investigating after a 2-year-old boy died in a shooting Wednesday in the Chester County town of Great Falls, officials said.

Rylin Burrell died after the shooting, said Terry Tinker, Chester County coroner. The child died at a hospital in Lancaster later Wednesday after the shooting on Washington Street, Tinker said.

No other details about the fatal shooting have been released.

“The investigation at this point is focused on how an unsecured firearm was accessed,” Great Falls Police Department Chief Olen Martin said in a statement.

A 7-year-old family member has been placed in the emergency protective custody of the South Carolina Department of Social Services pending further investigation, a news release said.

Great Falls is a town of about 2,000 people along the Catawba River.

Investigators from the State Law Enforcement Division child fatality unit are involved in a joint investigation with local police, Martin said.

SLED is required under South Carolina law to investigate deaths of children.
