Police: Boy hiding in closet made up York 911 call

Multiple city and county units responded to a York home after a 12-year-old boy reported he was hiding from burglars in an upstairs closet. The only problem: Investigators believe the boy made up the burglary.

York police responded at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday to a reported break-in in progress in a home on Hunter Park Drive. The only person in the home, a young boy, told dispatchers he was calling from inside an upstairs closet and could hear intruders moving around downstairs.

Patrol officers, detectives, a forensics unit and the York County K-9 team arrived at the home to find no intruders at the scene and a curious mismatch of evidence.

An incident report notes that drawers and beds in the house appeared to have been disturbed, and the kitchen cabinets had all been opened. But nothing appeared to have been taken, and several expensive items appeared not to have been disturbed. The front and back doors were found open, but with no apparent damage.

The boy was found by officers hiding in a closet. When questioned, police say, he reportedly admitted he made up the story and staged the house to look like a burglary.

The K-9 unit tried to run a trial for the nonexistent burglars outside the house, without success. Forensics did arrive at the house, but was canceled and sent back after the call was found to be false.
