SC woman dies after son, 6, also killed. Shooting suspect dead after deputy shootout
A 44-year-old South Carolina woman has died days after she and her 6-year-old son were shot by a man killed afterward following a shootout with Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies, the coroner said.
Christina McVay died Thursday night after being hospitalized after she was shot, said Karla Knight-Deese, the Lancaster County coroner.
Jacob Tyler Sobieraj, 24, called 911 Sunday, telling officials he had shot both McVay and her son at McVay’s Mosteller Drive home, the coroner and State Law Enforcement Division said earlier this week.
McVay’s son died Monday. His name has not been released. The boy had been a student at a Lancaster County elementary school before he was killed, the Lancaster County School District told The Herald. The district declined to say which school he attended or what grade he was in.
“Lancaster County School District is mourning the loss of one of our students, the district said in a statement. “Our heartfelt sympathy is with the family and our community.”
Alleged shooter died after gunfire with deputies
After the 911 call saying he shot McVay and her son, Sobieraj was armed with a gun when deputies arrived and shots were exchanged between him and officers, according to SLED and Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile.
Sobieraj died at the scene.
No motive or reason for the shootings inside the house before deputies arrived has been released.
Because sheriff’s deputies were involved in the shooting, Faile requested SLED investigate the entire incident, sheriff’s office spokesman Doug Barfield said.
The SLED investigation into the shootings remains ongoing.
