Woman, 30, found dead in yard of Clover home

A man was charged with murder after a woman’s body was found in the back yard of a Clover home Monday, according to the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Steven Tyler Benfield, 35, was charged with murder and placed in the York County detention center.

York County deputies responded to 14088 W. Highway 55 in Clover about 10 a.m. Monday regarding a death investigation, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. Deputies found the body of Jessica Pitman Stewart, 30, in the backyard of the home.

Detectives are investigating the crime as a homicide, and through an investigation were able to obtain a warrant for murder for Benfield.

Sheriff’s spokesman Trent Faris said Monday night he could not comment on how Stewart died, citing the ongoing investigation. He said Benfield owns the home where the woman was found.

This is the fifth homicide of 2015 in York County.
