SC man wanted on drug, gun charges jailed after chase in York, police say
A suspect is in custody at the York County jail after a police chase in the city of York on Wednesday afternoon in which one officer sustained minor injuries and three law enforcement vehicles were damaged, officials said.
The chase happened around 3 p.m. York is the county seat located about 15 miles west of Rock Hill.
Anthony Christopher Shannon Jr., 31, of York, is in the York County jail after he was caught in woods after the vehicle pursuit, said Matt Earls, commander of the York County Multijurisdictional Drug Enforcement Unit.
The unit’s agents were attempting to serve outstanding drug and weapons arrest warrants on Shannon during a traffic stop before he rammed his vehicle into two police cars and led police on the pursuit, Earls said. One officer received minor injuries, he said.
Later in the pursuit Shannon hit another vehicle in a shopping center parking lot on Liberty Street that includes a Food Lion, according to Earls and Lt. Sean Bailey of the York Police Department.
Shannon drove to Railroad Avenue where he left his car and fled into woods on foot, Earls said. York County Sheriff’s Office dogs and other police tracked him before he was taken into custody. Shannon was not injured, Earls said.
Charges served and more pending, police say
Police and jail records show Shannon faces 15 drug and weapon charges. He has been served two warrants from the S.C. Highway Patrol from part of the pursuit, and more charges may be pending from the collisions with the police vehicles and officers, according to Earls.
The investigation is ongoing.
The county drug unit is made up of officers from the sheriff’s office and municipal officers from other police agencies.
