A South Carolina man with past felony convictions in York and Chester counties who is already in state custody for drugs has been sentenced to more than six years in federal prison for illegally possessing a gun, according to prosecutors and court records.

U.S. District Court Judge Cameron Currie sentenced Brentton Timmons, 30, to 77 months for a loaded pistol found by Chester deputies in August 2024 after a traffic stop. Police found a loaded pistol under the driver’s seat, prosecutors said.

Currie rejected a request from Timmons’ lawyer for a lighter sentence that claimed he has a history of trauma, including being shot in 2022 and knowing two other people who died in area gun crimes, federal court records show.

Timmons, of Chester, is banned from having a gun after convictions for assault and battery in York County from a 2014 shooting where he received six years in prison, and other drug and weapons convictions in Chester County, records show.

He is currently in a South Carolina state prison in Lancaster County after being sentenced on two Chester drug convictions in 2024, according to federal court records and the S.C. Department of Corrections website. He will be moved to federal prison after his South Carolina state prison sentence ends, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
