Former York Sheriff Tolson pays fine, pleads no contest in crash, lawyer says
Former York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson has paid a fine from a 2025 charge alleging that he crashed a vehicle then left the scene, according to court records.
Tolson pleaded no contest, according to online York County court records and his lawyer. The fine was $232.50.
Tolson was no longer sheriff at the time of the crash.
The S.C. Highway Patrol investigated the July 13 crash on Airport Road in Rock Hill and charged Tolson, according to a warrant obtained by The Herald. He was charged with failure to report after striking fixtures on or adjacent to a highway, according to the warrant.
He was arrested when he turned himself in at the Moss Justice Center on July 14. He was released on a personal recognizance bond shortly afterward.
The case was assigned to a York County magistrate court in Fort Mill. The fine was paid before a court hearing scheduled for this week.
Harold Staley, Tolson’s lawyer, said Tolson paid the fine and the case is over. Tolson looks forward to continuing to be a private citizen and contributing to his community, Staley said.
“Mr. Tolson paid the fine and this matter is now concluded,” Staley said.
Tolson, a Republican, was sheriff for two terms. He was elected in 2016 and again in 2020. In April 2024, after filing for re-election days earlier, Tolson withdrew from the race on the last day of filing.
