Police in South Carolina have arrested a 72-year-old York man on attempted murder and other charges stemming from a road rage incident involving a teenager Saturday, officials said.

Michael Thomas Bean also is charged with pointing and presenting a gun and malicious damage to property, Lt. Sean Bailey of the York Police Department told The Herald.

Bean was shot in the arm in the incident on Alexander Love Highway around 10:30 a.m., according to police. The 18-year-old returned fire after Bean allegedly shot at him over a “road rage incident,” according to a statement from the police department.

The department also posted the statement on its official Facebook page.

Bean “aggressively maneuvered his vehicle and engaged in a verbal altercation with the 18-year-old victim,” police said in the statement. “During the encounter, Bean retrieved a pistol from his vehicle and fired a shot at the victim’s car. The victim returned fire in self-defense, striking Bean and his vehicle.”

The 18-year-old was not injured and has not been charged, Bailey said. Police have not identified the teen.

The incident happened near York Comprehensive High School but had no connection with the school, police and the York school district said.

Bean is in custody at the York County jail awaiting a first appearance in court, Bailey said.
