Loaded gun, knife found in 5-year-old’s bookbag at Indian Land SC school: Sheriff
A loaded gun and a knife were found in a South Carolina kindergarten student’s bookbag at an elementary school in Indian Land Wednesday, officials said.
A teacher at Harrisburg Elementary School helping the 5-year-old male student pack his bag for dismissal first found the knife, then a school resource officer summoned to investigate found the loaded .380-caliber pistol, Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile said in a statement.
The school is located in northern Lancaster County, east of Fort Mill and south of Charlotte’s Ballantyne area.
Faile called the incident “alarming.”
No one was hurt, according to Faile.
“No information has been developed that the student knew the knife and the pistol were in the bookbag or brought them to school with the intent to present them or use them in a hostile manner toward anyone present,” Faile said.
It remains unclear who put the gun and knife in the bookbag and when it was done, Faile said. The case remains under investigation by deputies.
