A South Carolina man who had been off parole for only weeks in 2023 before the killing of a man and a dog in Lancaster has been sentenced to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder and other charges, officials said.

Judge Robert Hood sentenced Derrick Thomas Brown, 40, late Friday after a four-day trial at the Lancaster County Courthouse, according to Mike Watkins, the Lancaster County Clerk of Court.

The jury found Brown guilty of murder, malicious injury to personal property, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a weapon by a person convicted of certain crimes, according to 6th Circuit Solicitor’s Office prosecutors Nicole Wine and Melissa McGinnis.

Timothy Scott Barbee, 51, was shot in April 2023 at a Hughes Street home. Officials also found a dog, a 6-month-old Cane Corso puppy named Kane, that had been killed, McGinnis said.

Brown’s parole from an assault and battery conviction had finished less than a month before the 2023 fatal shooting, McGinnis said.

The jury found Brown not guilty of first-degree burglary.

Brown will appeal the convictions, said his lawyer, 6th Circuit Public Defender William Frick.
