Felon faces murder charges after man killed, another hurt in York, SC shooting
A man police say is a felon who illegally had a gun has been arrested after a shooting at a gathering in York left one man dead and another wounded, officials said.
York Police Department officers arrested Kejuan Deangelo Dye on Saturday, according to Lt. Sean Bailey and a written statement from the department.
He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, the statement said.
Police responded to the shooting near West Liberty Street and Wellington Square Drive around 11:45 p.m. Friday after several 911 calls, police said in the statement. One man was dead at the scene from a fatal gunshot wound, officers said. The second victim was taken to a hospital after being shot in the leg, according to police. His condition was unclear Saturday afternoon.
The identities of the victims have not been released.
No alleged motive or other details about the shooting have been released.
The investigation remains ongoing, Bailey told The Herald on Saturday.
The city of York, the York County seat of government with around 10,000 residents, is located west of Rock Hill. The fatal shooting is thought to be the first in the small city in two years since a North Carolina man was killed in May 2024.
Dye was released from the S.C. Department of Corrections to community supervision in York County in May 2025 after serving a sentence from 2018 to 2025 for assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, according to corrections spokesperson Chrysti Shain.
Dye, listed as 33 years old by the York County jail website and SCDC records emailed to The Herald, remains in custody pending an initial court appearance. He cannot be given bail on a murder charge by a magistrate judge in a first appearance. Only a circuit court judge can set bail on a murder charge in South Carolina.
