Report: York dispatcher sees inmate making noose, prevents possible suicide attempt
Quick action by a York Police Department dispatcher appears to have stopped a potential suicide attempt by an inmate Thursday, according to a police report.
The dispatcher was watching the video screens from jail cameras when she saw a woman, 34, tying strings together and twisting a blanket into a noose, a York Police Department report shows.
The dispatcher notified a sergeant who found the inmate in the cell tying the noose with the bedding material in her lap, the report shows. The officer put the inmate into handcuffs and asked what she was doing.
The inmate told the officer, “He is driving me crazy,” concerning a male inmate in the next cell, the police report states.
The woman was taken to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill for evaluation.
York Police Chief Andy Robinson praised the dispatcher, saying she “did exactly what she is supposed to do.”
The dispatcher notified the officer, who took quick action to keep the inmate safe, Robinson said.
