Will Clowney visit dad in York jail during Carolinas trip, Texans vs. Panthers game?
If Houston Texans NFL player Jadeveon Clowney wants to see his father during his team’s trip to the Carolinas to play the Panthers Sunday, he will be treated like any other visitor, jail officials said.
It is also unlikely that David “Chilli Bean” Morgan can watch Clowney play on television. The game is on CBS but the jail does not show local channels.
Morgan, Clowney’s father, is in the York County jail without bond after an Aug. 4 shooting incident at a Rock Hill strip club. Morgan, 45, a convicted felon who spent 12 years in prison, was charged with two counts of attempted murder and weapons charges in an incident where Morgan was shot but survived.
Clowney’s Houston team plays the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte Sunday.
Morgan, like all inmates, is allowed a visitor list of four family members and two friends, said Kim Morehouse, a spokesperson for the York County Sheriff’s Office that operates the county detention center. Jail officials “try to accommodate for family from out of town for any inmate,” Morehouse said.
All visitors must go through a security check, Morehouse said, no matter who they are. Inmates are allowed one hour of visitation once a week.
Citing security and safety policies for all inmates, police declined to say if Clowney is on Morgan’s visitor list.
Police and prosecutors have said Morgan, a convicted felon barred by state and federal law, shot twice at a Crazy Horse night club employee after being removed from the club stage. Morgan was shot in the incident when the employee returned fire. Morgan was denied bond last month when a judge said Morgan was a “danger to the community.”
Clowney’s mother, a single parent, raised him while his father spent 12 years in prison for burglary and other felonies. Clowney was the top pick in the 2014 NFL draft and signed a $22 million contract.
Morgan applied for a public defender, but an official with the 16th Circuit Public Defender’s Office said Morgan has now retained a private lawyer to fight the charges. Morgan faces as much as 70 years in prison if convicted.
