Rock Hill man dies in Charlotte shooting; Fountain Park vigil planned

A Rock Hill family is planning a vigil Friday after a shooting death of a Rock Hill man in Charlotte Saturday.

Melvin Ashby, 26, a Rock Hill native, was killed Saturday in the incident on Lantana Avenue in Charlotte, police said. Ashby and another man had an “altercation that led to the shooting,” according to a Charlotte police written statement, but that man was interviewed and released.

Police said that officers responded to a domestic disturbance involving Ashby the night before he was killed.

The homicide case remains active but no one has been arrested. Police said that information police have uncovered will be presented to Charlotte prosecutors to determine if any charges will be filed.

Ashby had recently become a father, according to family members in Rock Hill.

The vigil that is aimed at stopping violence and to remember Ashby’s life is set for 6 p.m. Friday at Fountain Park in downtown Rock Hill.
